Jordan Spieth, making his last start before the Masters, says his game is ready for the big one.

Jordan Spieth is the defending champion at Augusta National and he’s ready. He’s more than ready – he’s pumped!

“I’m extremely excited,” Jordan Spieth said to media this week about the Masters. “Just saying that (the Masters) makes you just want to go out and do push ups or something, just like it makes you really, really excited.”

And like every other Masters champ in the past, he hates to give up the green jacket.

“I think having the jacket with me now because, I had to take it because it has to go back to the grounds and possibly stay there, that’s certainly motivation,” he admitted.  “It seems maybe silly that that would be motivation, but, you know, it’s things like that that make a difference.”

His biggest worry, if a 22-year-old who won $22 million last year can have a worry, is the Tuesday night dinner where he’ll host the past champions.  Regardless of his dinner duties, he won’t spend the week celebrating because he wants to win the jacket back.  He’s all business when it comes to the golf ahead of him in Augusta.

The good news is his game is coming around.

“Everything is there,” he said. “Everything is exactly where it was last year. It’s right where we want it to be going into the Masters.”

According to Spieth getting into contention or even winning the Shell Houston Open would be perfect as a warm up.

“I just want to get off to a good start this week, feel like I hit a lot of solid shots on my lines, that I have great control over my short game and speed control on my putting,” he explained.  “It’s just a matter, now, of hitting nerve-racking shots and putts before that week, which means I got to get myself into contention this week.”

Granted Spieth has one victory already this season, but it was in January.  A lot can happen to a golf game in three months, but Spieth thinks his team is ready.

“We had a correct formula last year. I think that we can just kind of use that again, and I don’t think I have to guard against much because I don’t think it will feel much different,” he said. “Might just feel a little bit more comfortable possibly, but who knows. I’ll let you know when I’m there.”

The difference between last year and this, as far as his golf game is concerned, is that he is less consistent, at least according to him.

“We had just won and finished runner up,” he said about 2015. “Better finishes than I am (having prior to the tournament) this year.”

Spieth plans to play nine holes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, assuming that the weather cooperates. He hopes to play with guys who are playing well, so he can see how different shots land and so he can see how putts react from different places on the tricky Augusta National greens.

“I think I took a little bit for granted having the green jacket in my possession. You know, I really took advantage of it to start and then I just kind — it was in my closet for the longest of times,” he said about the last 12 months as a Masters champ. “I would always obviously go in and look at it and it was always there, but I feel like I could do more with it.”
