Pebble Beach: Jordan Spieth and Derek Fathauer share lead heading into weekend
Pebble Beach “Crosby weather” gives way to sun – Jordan Spieth & Derek Fathauer are the guys to catch.
Pebble Beach weather improved. The weekend forecast promises clear skies and dry days for this PGA Tour classic.
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am field battled wind and rain on Thursday, then thick fog on Friday. Yet again “Crosby weather” snarled the schedule.
Still Behind Schedule
Only 33 players out of 154 completed their second rounds.
The clubhouse leaders after Friday, Jordan Spieth and Derek Fathauer, are sitting atop the leaderboard at 10-under. Spieth was among the lucky players. He finished up his 2nd round before the horn suspended play. Fathauer was halted through 17-holes.
"I didn’t feel any nerves out there, even though I knew I was toward the lead, just because so much could happen with three courses. The first two rounds, it’s been easy. Tomorrow might feel a little different. But in my opinion, I’m at 10 under now. If I can try and just make two (birdies) a side at Pebble Beach each time, and make up for the bogeys with maybe another birdie, it may be good enough. – Jordan Spieth"
Paired with Jason Day on Saturday, Spieth plays Pebble Beach in his 3rd round after completing his first two rounds at Monterey Peninsula and Spyglass Hill. Jordan carded a 65 in Friday’s round, battling through the almost invisible conditions in route to 8 birdies. Spieth’s putter has been ideal so far, arguably the strongest club in his bag this week.
Derek Fathauer is playing the best golf of his year right now. Fathauer has to make up the last hole of his 2nd round Saturday morning, 9th hole, at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Derek currently looks to card a bogey-free round Saturday morning, after making 8 birdies in his 2nd round. Fathauer’s scrambling this week has been crucial. He’s at 81.82%, well ahead of the 56.68% field average.
Friday’s Pebble Beach Highlights:
Perennial fans know the Pebble Beach fun is just getting started. Some of golf’s biggest names are in the hunt now, including Jason Day, Patrick Reed, Brandt Snedeker, John Rahm and Dustin Johnson.

Snedeker and Johnson are each looking to become two-time Pebble Beach Pro-Am champions. Snedeker is currently 5-under with four holes to play at Spyglass, while DJ shot a 69 at Spyglass and will take on Pebble Beach in his 3rd round. Snedeker is tied for 8th and DJ is tied for 13th.
At -9, Jason Day is turning a few heads too. With six holes still to play in his 2nd round Day is currently 7-under through 12 holes at Spyglass hills and sits in 3rd place, one stroke behind Spieth and Fathauer.
Day started feeling it when the par 5-seventh kick launched a streak of four consecutive birdies stopped only by the horn.
Fog Snarled Friday Play
Just to give you some perspective on Friday’s ghastly fog, John Rahm’s and Andrew Loupe’s tee shots disappeared after leaving the club face.
Rahm sits in 13th place at 4-under after shooting a 5-under round Friday at Pebble Beach to get him back in the mix after reeling off 6 birdies in a row. Loupe is not having his best week to say the least – it’s okay to blame the weather this week – as he sits in 150th at +9.
