Still Around For The Weekend

World No. 134 Li Haotong, is the highest-ranked player at the Joburg Open this week, admittedly meaning there’s not much for star power. Why so many Europeans are eager to subject themselves to the carnage across the pond (looking at you,  Bear Trap) at the Honda Classic is puzzling, but money talks.

Li is in danger of making the cut tied for 106th at two-under with three holes to play in round two.

More from Pro Golf Now

First-round leader Paul Peterson went deep with a nine-under, bogey-free 62 on the West. Maybe he ate something different for breakfast Friday. Whatever it was, his two-over total through 12 on the East jettisoned him to a tie for 14th and an array of possibilities in his immediate future. A few more birdies and Peterson’s back in the hunt and in Saturday’s final pairings. A few more bogeys and he’s packing his bags.

All three major champions in the field are likely heading home early. Darren Clarke (five-over) and countryman Trevor Immelman (even-par) are sure misses through 36 holes. Y.E. Yang is at one-under and has six holes on the East to gain at least three strokes to make the weekend.

Other names you might know: T14 (-7). Brandon Stone, T45 (-5). Tom Lewis, T86 (-3). Simon Dyson, T106 (-2). Alvaro Quiros; T86 (-3) and T59. Richard Sterne (-4).

Scotland’s Connor Syme sits the highest of four amateurs in a tie for 86th at three-under, which included a 69 on the East. South Africa’s Kyle McClatchie bounced back from a 78 on the East with a six-under 65 on the West on Friday.
