Other news and notes from the week:

  • As mentioned earlier, there was a lot of rain at the Joburg Open. Dozens of players, some not even in the field, sung the praises of the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington GC staff. Masters champion Danny Willett was one who chimed in. Others went so far as to declare them the second winner alongside Fichardt.

The highest world-ranked player in the field entering the week was China’s Li Haotong at No. 134. He missed the cut and dropped one spot. Fichardt climbed from No. 313 to 192.

USA’s Paul Peterson’s first-round 62 (-10) was the low score of the tournament. He finished 10 shots higher the next round en route to tying for seventh place at 12-under.

Ninety-one of 202 players made the cut and 89 of 91 finished under par for the event.

The field’s three major champions — Darren Clarke (+5), Y.E. Yang (E) and countryman Trevor Immelman (E) — all missed the cut.

Home fans were treated to plenty of South African success. Including Pretoria native Fichardt’s win, five of the top 10 finishers were South African and 29 made the cut.

Defending champion and 22-year-old South African Haydn Porteous was in the mix at nine-under through 36 holes before settling for a final-round even-par 72 and a tie for 23rd.
