Bryson DeChambeau looks to have resolved his putting woes at the Puerto Rico Open.

While we were all focused on the action in Austin, Bryson Dechambeau, D.A. Points and Bill Lunde made big moves at the Puerto Rico Open.

It’s been up and down for the past year for former US Amateur champion DeChambeau. He’s struggled to find his rhythm since he turned pro after finishing his final round at the 2016 Masters.

DeChambeau walked away from Augusta National a year ago with low amateur honors and high hopes.

Without even a pause DeChambeau played his first event as a pro the following week at the RBC Heritage and looked very solid with a T4 finish. But he wasn’t able to sustain his game. A series of disappointing missed cuts followed his Hilton Head debut.

A little sunshine peeked through the dark clouds when he recorded a T6 at the CVS Health Charity Classic in June but DeChambeau still wasn’t able to do what he needed to do to secure his PGA card.

By fall the bright promise of Augusta National had clouded over. Then came his first pro win, at the Web.com DAP Championship in September. It was enough to bump him back up into PGA events, but there’ve been more missed cuts and, with the exception of the Franklin Templeton Shootout in December, none of those front page finishes DeChambeau had envisioned as punctuating his young career.

His T27 finish at the Valspar seemed to end his most recent run of missed cuts, but there were problems on the putting surface.

DeChambeau says he may have resolved his putting woes with his -7 second round at Coco Beach.

"A couple of weeks ago at Innisbrook I three-putted a couple times — six times, in fact — and just cut the momentum out of me and that was kind of a disappointment. I never really got a low round there and I could have pretty easily. So I took the three-putts out this week."

DeChambeau needs to stay on top of his short game, however, if he hopes to come out the winner in Puerto Rico.

Despite a 3-putter that put a bogey on his 2nd round card, D.A. Points was piling up the birdies yesterday and looks to have his game dialed in. Bill Lunde is probably less of a threat to DeChambeau than Points.

Although a win at Coco Beach won’t get DeChambeau in the 2017 Masters, it would get him exemptions to The PLAYERS and the PGA Championship. For the guy whose high hopes of 2016 have diminished a bit facing the reality of 2017, those are decent perks.
