Dustin Johnson withdrew from The 2017 Masters after scary injury, although competing is still a possibility

As we know, world number one, Dustin Johnson is out for the 2017 Masters. According to Golf World, Johnson sustained a back injury after falling down the stairs in a home he was renting in Augusta.

Johnson has already won three times this season and, as expected, was a heavy favorite heading into golf’s first major. With his withdrawal from the Masters, Rory McIlroy (second in the World Golf Rankings) is highest ranked player left in the field.

The power hitting Johnson is ranked number one in driving distance and greens in regulation percentage. This made him a threat with the driver and irons.

With the tear he’s been on, it makes you wonder if the injury will throw him off his game. Even after he resumes playing, will he be the same Johnson?

You can have season of your life, and then next you know, you’re not the same player. With him out of this tournament, it could be a bad sign in the future.

However, his consistency has been remarkable. He has won at least once, every year he’s been on the PGA Tour.

This is amazing considering the slew of talent he had to beat. A lot of players have come and gone, and DJ is still playing great.

He’s a little bit like rapper, Drake. When Drake came on to the hip hop scene around 2008, some people thought he would be a one hit wonder. Little did anyone know he would still be going strong almost a decade later.

Johnson’s the same way. So, although the injury was cringe worthy, he can still make a comeback.

Could missing the Masters affect Johnson mentally?

Certainly, not playing at Augusta while he’s playing his best golf may mess with him mentally. The Masters has an amazing, yet quiet way of manipulating the brain.

It’s the one major that every player wants. So he may feel some dread.

Whoever wins the coveted Green Jacket on Sunday afternoon, may leave Johnson with images in his head: “Could that have been me?”

It’s like when a friend asks you to go somewhere, but then you’re too tired to go. After awhile, you start to regret not going with that friend as your laziness disappears for the day.

Albeit, there’s not much Johnson could’ve done. An injury is an injury, and falling down some stairs is definitely no fun.

It is possible he could lose some distance off the tee. However, he has become a very solid golfer around the greens as well which will benefit him.

Not to mention, he’ll still hit it farther than most players. When you’re hot with the driver, it’s hard to slow you down, and he’s done this his whole career.

In his absence, we saw Charley Hoffman tear it up during round one of the 2017 Masters. It’s going to be a great weekend, even with the crazy weather.
