As promised, the number one group to watch at the Byron Nelson is led by the defending champion, Sergio Garcia, who snuck into the playoff a year ago with some solid play in the final round and won on the first extra hole. The current Masters Champion had an up-and-down week at THE PLAYERS, including that ace at the 17th on the opening day, but still found himself in contention for quite a while at Sawgrass but some costly shots ruined any chance of winning and he finished tied for 30th. Since his win at the Byron Nelson last year, Sergio has rattled off two more victories, one at Dubai and of course his win at Augusta, and seven top-10s, making him a real threat to become just the third man to win this historic tournament three times. He would join three-time winner Sam Snead and four-time champion Tom Watson in that elite group if he bests the field over the next four days.

Garcia certainly isn’t the only heavy hitter in this group as he’s joined in this trio by world No. 4 Jason Day and world No. 15 Patrick Reed. Day hasn’t been playing his best golf recently, certainly understandable with what’s been going on with his mother’s health issues, and tied for 60th at THE PLAYERS after a final-round 80. The former number one player in the world hasn’t finished higher than 22nd in his last five tournaments and withdrew after just six holes at the WGC-Match Play.

As for Reed, he is playing better as of late. After a bad run of tournaments that saw him finish T-59, T-61, T-38 and T-51 before missing three consecutive cuts, the 26-year-old Texan finished tied for 12th at the Wells Fargo Championship and tied for 22nd at THE PLAYERS so perhaps he’s starting to turn it around. His last appearance at the Byron Nelson came in 2013 and he finished in 81st.
