Daniel Berger

This week’s defending champion, Berger is one of those players who’s been playing pretty well this year but hasn’t come particularly close to winning anything. With memories from last year working in his favor and most of the world’s elite players staying home, he should have a good opportunity to flip the script and contend for a trophy this week.

Again, while he hasn’t really been in the mix for any titles, Berger can hang his hat upon a couple of solid finishes this year: a solo fifth at the Shell Houston Open and a tie for seventh at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He doesn’t stand out in any one statistical category but is instead strong across the board, ranking inside the top 45 in three separate strokes gained categories. His track record at the FedEx St. Jude Classic isn’t exactly extensive, but he did co-lead the field in greens in regulation en route to last year’s win.

Quiet since last month’s PLAYERS Championship, Berger should be well-rested and ready to defend his lone PGA TOUR title this week. He’s just 24 years old, but the Florida native already looks set to become a legitimate course horse at TPC Southwind.
