No. 2 Maverick McNealy

We’re at the point in the ranking where I’m really grasping at straws in deciphering the final four guys on this list.

Case in point, No. 2 on my ranking is: A Haskins Award winner, the world No. 2 amateur (and former No. 1), and finished his college career at Stanford with 11 wins. The 11 tied him at the top of the school’s list with Patrick Rodgers and some guy named Tiger Woods.

McNealy got into this week’s field, as well as the Open Championship, via the MacCormick Medal given to the No. 1 ranked amateur at the end of each summer.

After he competes in September’s Walker Cup, it’s no sure thing he’ll turn professional. He’s expressed interest in going into the business world like his father, Scott, who was a founder of multi-billionaire company, Sun Microsystems.

McNealy missed the cut in his only U.S. Open start at age 18 in 2014. This time around, he could add to his medal collection if he brings his “A” game and putts lights out like he was prone to do in college.
