Madelene Sagstrom: Rolex Rank – 68

Pornanong Phatlum is always worth a look, but she hasn’t sustained the strong start she made to the season. With missed cuts at the Manulife and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, I’m going to sideline Phatlum until she shows me that she’s ready to start finishing on the front page of the leaderboard again.

Rookie Angel Yin continues to impress. She hasn’t missed a cut since the LOTTE but, despite that pair of back-to-back T5 finishes at the Texas Shootout and the Lorena Ochoa Match Play, her game seems to be trending in the wrong direction. Maybe she needs to take a week off? Still, if you like her, put her on your team. She’s a solid player and the leveled playing field could give her an added advantage this week.

At first glance Aditi Ashok and Mel Reid are also promising choices. Even though she hasn’t recorded any top-10 finishes, Ashok is delivering a consistent, steady game and she held up very well at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship last week. I’m looking for her to record a top-10 finish soon. Admittedly, Reid is struggling, but she has a fine game in her bag and if you’re a Mel Reid fan don’t hesitate to put her to work. She has enormous talent and could turn her season around with one good finish. With low pressure this week, I can see her emerging as one of the field’s dominant players.

Madelene Sagstrom’s rookie season got off to a very problematic start with three consecutive missed cuts, and that made me step back from her for a while. But more recently Sagstrom seems to be finding her rhythm and playing to her potential. Her T4 at the Meijer LPGA Classic and T11 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship impressed me. I’m going to overlook the missed cut she sandwiched between those events and put her on my Thornberry Creek team this week. She’s a bigger risk than Angel Yin, but it’s time to see what she can do.
