How could anybody resist Beef Johnston for their fantasy team? Even Stephanie Wei enjoys hanging out with him. With an eighth place finish at the 2016 Open Championship and some respectable finishes this season at his PGA TOUR starts, Johnston shows every sign of settling into a comfortable celebrity on both the PGA and European tours.
Admittedly, his game has been a bit erratic and it’s true that he missed the cut at the Irish Open. On the other hand, he made the cut at the U.S. Open, finished T42, then turned around and the next week finished T23 at the Open de France. And he edged into the top-20 at Dundonald Links, so he’s looking ready.
Birkdale is the kind of track that Johnston could embrace with open arms. Like Patrick Reed, Beef Johnson tends to push forward into the fray with vigor and enthusiasm. He’s not going to be disuaded by bits or rain and wind and sunshine that come in unpredictable waves. That’s just a part of the game.
