Open Championship: 5 international sleepers could steal the Claret Jug
Since qualifying for the European Tour as a 19-year-old and placing in the top 10 of his first event, golf nuts have had Grillo on their radar for a while.
Getting into a playoff at the 2015 Puerto Rico Open on a sponsor’s exemption and winning the Frys.com Open that same year only enhanced the Argentine’s potential.

A breakout moment at a big event is all Grillo needs to become a star. He’s virtually a lock for this year’s international Presidents Cup team. He’s also knocked on the door having made the cut at each of the four majors.
Take away Henrik and Phil at the top last year, and Grillo’s T12 five strokes behind J.B. Holmes in third place looks a lot better.
Grillo’s in a bit of a rough patch with two missed cuts in the last three starts, but those are his only blemishes dating back to February.
Past success at Birkdale could help, but given it’s been nine years since the Open made its way there, course knowledge (or a lack thereof) may not be overly important.
With solid ballstriking stats across the board, I like Grillo to make enough putts to score well this week.
