Women’s British Open: Lexi Thompson v Kingsbarns
Lexi Thompson is ready to take on the Kingsbarns bunkers at the Women’s British Open.
On the eve of the Ricoh Women’s British Open first round Lexi Thompson is showing her stuff on Instagram. I’m not typically an Instagram fan, but if I want to stay in touch with the hot young gun in American women’s golf I have to check in to her account now and then.
Thompson is coming into the 41st Women’s British Open with a stellar season and a finely-tuned game and she’s definitely looking for the win.
Thompson’s playing stats tell the tale
We’ve all watched Thompson come up onto her toes as she delivers those magnificent drives and she’s going to need that length this week on the rain-soaked Kingsbarns track. She ranks 3rd on the Tour in driving distance and 2nd in GIR. But then, her long game’s never been in question.
We less often look at Thompson’s scrambling stats, perhaps because we’re so in awe of her Mighty Girl ball striking, but those skills could come into play this week. Kingsbarns has some nasty bunkers and Lexi does tend to get off line every now and then.
Thompson leads the Tour in sand saves, a skill that could come in very handy as she battles the golf course. She posted this video to her Instagram account that leaves no doubt about her ability to power out of the worst Kingsbarns will throw at her, and do so with incredible accuracy.

Thompson at the RWBO
What kind of track record does Lexi Thompson have at the Women’s British Open? Let’s work our way backwards. Last year at Woburn Thompson recorded a T8 finish. At Turnberry in 2015, playing in testing conditions, she finished T17 and she didn’t play at Royal Birkdale in 2014. She missed the cut at St. Andrews in 2013 and in her rookie year, she finished T17 at Royal Liverpool.
Thompson’s game is trending up, both for the 2017 Women’s British Open and in terms of her performance this season. When you combine her powerful athletic talent with a looper with local knowledge, Thompson’s looking locked and loaded and more than ready to hoist another trophy.
