This was the perfect week for Stacy Lewis to end her winless streak – Houston needs her generosity.

Stacy Lewis hasn’t hoisted an LPGA trophy since the 2014 WalMart NW Arkansas Championship, but she found her mojo and ended that long, painful winless streak at the Cambia Portland Classic Presented by JTBC.

Lewis has come close to victory any number of times since that 2014 win in Arkansas, achingly close 12 times, to be precise. There’s really been nothing wrong with her game. She certainly hasn’t been in a slump. You don’t record a dozen runner-up finishes when you’re in a slump.

I’ve admired the way Lewis has persevered through the 83 starts since that Arkansas win.  There have been two Solheim Cup victories for Team USA and Stacy Lewis has figured prominently in both wins. She’s been there for her friends as they’ve hoisted trophies, and she’s not whined or pouted or thrown a club during what has to have been a frustrating period for her. Lewis is a consummate professional.

Hurricane Relief was the big winner

This was the perfect week for Lewis to break that winless streak. Her new home town, Houston, Texas, is in crisis and it’s just like Stacy Lewis to step up to the tee and make an ace when the team needs her. She’s donating her winnings, the entire $195,000 check, to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Lewis’ commitment got a ball rolling. One of her sponsors, KPMG, is matching Lewis’ gift. However, Stacy Lewis and KPMG aren’t the only golf-fueled Harvey donations.

Let’s give Callaway a hat tip for their donation program as well!

And while we’re at it, let’s also thank Chris Stroud and Shannon Fish for setting the standard for personal donations, with K.J. Choi, Jhonattan Vegas, J.J. Watt; Mark O’Meara following suit.

Ours is a game with a social conscience and a sense of community. Both have come into full focus this week with Stacy Lewis’ very generous donation, the KPMG and Callaway matches, and a long list of player-instigated hurricane relief initiatives. More are certain to follow in the coming weeks.

Indianapolis next for LPGA

The LPGA Tour goes from Portland to Indianapolis and the inaugural Indy Women in Tech Championship. It’s the final tune-up before the Tour heads to France for the final major of the 2017 season, the Evian Championship, September 14-17.

Next: US Women's Open Champions from The Babe to Karrie Webb

Stacy Lewis will join three other 2017 American winners in the Indy Women in Tech field: Cristie Kerr, Lexi Thompson, and Danielle Kang. Perhaps one of them can take home some more hardware this week!
