Bryson DeChambeau has largely failed to make the massive impact that so many observers – yours truly included – expected of him early in his PGA TOUR career. Frankly, if we’re being honest, that’s not nearly as big of a knock as some make it out to be. Winning on the PGA TOUR is still ridiculously hard, and DeChambeau took his lumps last year before his breakthrough win at the John Deere Classic.

That win propelled DeChambeau into the Open Championship, and later into the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Overall, that’s not a bad year at all for a guy who was in his first full year as a TOUR member.

2017-18, however, is going to be a year that will be remembered for DeChambeau’s success, or lack thereof. I’m not about to say he’ll fade into obscurity if he doesn’t win a major this year, but he’ll certainly need to find himself in contention more frequently if he wants to grow into the player he has the potential to be.

DeChambeau is off to a great start this year, with a top-25 at the Safeway Open, and a top-ten finish this past week in Las Vegas at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He’ll have to carry over his solid iron play, while also making a few less bogeys, but DeChambeau is in prime position to contend again at Mayakoba.
