AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Top five celebrities in the field
Justin Verlander has it made, doesn’t he? He’s a six-time MLB all-star, a Cy Young award winner, and league MVP. This past fall, after a last-second trade sent him from the Detroit Tigers to the Houston Astros, the 34-year-old proved he still had plenty left in the tank, carrying Houston to the World Series title.
Oh yeah, and two days later, he married Kate Upton in Italy. Yep, you could say he’s doing alright for himself.
As if he wasn’t already successful enough in everything else he has apparently ever tried, Verlander is also a fantastic golfer. Playing to a reported 4 handicap, the 6’5”, 225-pound flamethrower has played in both the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Diamond Resorts Invitational over the years.
By all accounts, he’s as serious a golfer as you’ll find in any sport. Considering the legacy of some of the starting pitchers who have made their mark on the links – Greg Maddux and John Smoltz come to mind – you have to like Verlander’s chances to make an impact on the Monterey Peninsula this week.
