DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – NOVEMBER 17: Joost Luiten of the Netherlands looks down the 8th hole during the second round of the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates on November 17, 2017 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. (Photo by Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images) /

Joost Luiten closed his 2017 season strong to finish a respectable 36th in the final Race to Dubai standings. The Dutchman made his last seven cuts of the calendar year, one being a runner-up finish by one shot to host Sergio Garcia.

Now in 2018, the 32-year-old has made two of three cuts and tied for 11th in his last start two weeks ago at the Maybank Championship. There, a 72 put Luiten behind the eight ball to contend early but he rallied for three closing rounds of 68.

Luiten’s lack of power (147th last season in distance) doesn’t exactly help him, but it shouldn’t be as big of an issue on this links style course. He’s hitting 67 percent of his fairways.

His iron play has been on point so far as he finished 30th in GIR in 2017 and is 23rd now.

Luiten’s a five-time European Tour winner and a mainstay on the circuit. His last win in 2016 may seem a ways away now, and there aren’t many better weeks for Luiten to jump up and grab No. 6.
