Shubhankar Sharma, 21, contending at last week’s WGC-Mexico Championship was a surprise to many. I didn’t expect him to play well in his PGA Tour debut, but the fact that he did wasn’t a surprise, either.

Two European Tour wins already this season has him atop the Race to Dubai rankings. He’s backed up his wins at the Joburg Open and Maybank Championship with three more top-10s, one being a T9 in Mexico.

As if the Indian’s spirits won’t be buoyed enough by the home galleries this week, Sharma will be on cloud nine upon receiving a Masters invitation.

Unless he’s truly meant to be an elite player, Sharma could come back down to earth at some point. I’m not counting on it coming at his home Open.

Sharma tied for 17th in his 2015 debut and has three straight top-40s in this event.
