The Open de España is a long-term staple of the European Tour, and it’s a fitting return from the month-long break leading up to the Masters. Here are our favorites at Centro Nacional in this week’s power rankings.

The Open de España is a tournament more than a century old, but it was surprisingly left off the European Tour schedule in 2017. It’s now back at Centro Nacional de Golf in Madrid for the second time.

The Open de España has bounced to various venues in recent years, the last Real Club Valderrama in 2016.

Wherever the venue, this event is known to be a tougher one on the European Tour. The winning score hasn’t bested 10-under since 2011 and Andrew “Beef” Johnston won at one-over in ’16.

The winning total in 2007 at Centro Nacional was 16-under. The course is a par-72 measuring at 7,096 yards and opened in 2006. It is the home of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation.

Conditions expect to be relatively firm and fast. The weather forecast looks cool (temperatures in the 50s Fahrenheit and low double digits Celsius) with rain possible the final few days.

The past champions list is impressive. Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros (three times), Bernhard Langer (twice), Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Sergio Garcia have all hoisted the cup in Spain.

Most Spanish favorites are in this week’s field, though Sergio Garcia is absent.

Let’s take a look at who could become the center of attention at Centro Nacional.
