The BMW PGA Championship takes center stage on the European Tour this week, with a host of the sport’s top stars in action. Here’s a look at who you should be watching this week at historic Wentworth.

The BMW PGA Championship is one of the European Tour’s longest standing events. However, there’s a newness to the flagship tournament.

We’re in year No. 2 post-renovation executed by Ernie Els’ design team.

All 18 greens were reseeded with creeping bentgrass and equipped with sub-air systems that were the first of their kind in Europe.

All the bunkers have been redesigned, reconstructed or removed. Half of the course’s greens were partially or fully remodeled.

When it boils down to it, keeping your ball out of the trees to hold Wentworth’s small greens is crucial. The West course measures 7,284 yards for a par of 72.

Bombers like Rory McIlroy and Byeong Hun An join the likes of plodders Luke Donald and Anders Hansen (twice) as BMW PGA winners.

Whoever emerges from the pack this week will benefit from avoiding several big European names.

Keith Pelley and co. have to be upset missing out on world No. 3 Jon Rahm, No. 4 Justin Rose, No. 14 Henrik Stenson and 15 Sergio Garcia. Yet again, the field lacks a big American talent.

By all accounts, this event’s move to September starting in 2019 will eliminate some conflicts top European Tour players have in juggling US Open prep with playing the BMW.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs will be in the books to allow for more players to make the BMW PGA a priority.

In the meantime, we’ve still got five world top-25 players doing battle this week. They compose half of my 10 picks this week as we examine who’ll make it a worthwhile week at Wentworth.
