For all of Justin Rose’s talents, and they are many, the Open Championship is one that has never been particularly friendly to him. Still, he gets my nod in the premium category, just edging out fellow Englishman (and Carnoustie record-holder) Tommy Fleetwood.

The choice to play Rose here is actually pretty simple, when compared to some of his closest competitors. He’s a contender to win every single time he tees it up. He’s a two-time winner on the PGA TOUR already this year, with seven top-tens in 12 starts. Rose even finished tenth at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock, took a full month away from competition, and just posted a tie for ninth at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open. Most players can’t play at that high of a level for a month on one continent, much less two.

Again, Rose has – for some inexplicable reason – struggled to break through more at the British Open than any other major. He has just two career top-ten finishes at golf’s oldest championship, the least of all four. However, he did play very well at Carnoustie the last time around, as he tied for 12th place, just five shots off the lead. Considering where he opened that week (a first-round 75 had him 10 behind Sergio Garcia), that’s quite good.

I don’t believe in “due”, but if weather’s not playing a major factor this week, I like Justin Rose to finally have his British Open moment in the sun. Play him with confidence.
