Dell Technologies Championship: Power Ranking the top 10 at TPC Boston
This pick has some red flags, but I’m going to pull the trigger anyway.
All is not well with Rory as he took off last week’s The Northern Trust to get his mind right. It’s not like he’s played atrociously in recent weeks — he has four top-10s in his last eight starts — but for a guy with four majors and 22 worldwide victories, this isn’t going to cut it.
If he spent his down time honing his putter and wedges, he could be able to salvage his second win of the season and gain momentum going into the Ryder Cup.
TPC Boston is a good place for McIlroy to cure his ails.
He won the Dell Technologies Championship in 2012 and again in 2016. He’s 6-for-7 in cuts made and also picked up a T5 in 2014.
"I don’t know what it is. I think you have to, you have to take advantage of the par 5s. There’s certain holes out here that are gettable and you have to birdie them. I think I basically birdied every par 5 last year or pretty close to it and there’s just — there’s some really strong par 4s. I think all the par 3s are very strong,” McIlroy said in 2017. “It’s a nice mix of, you know, par 5s that you can score on, tough par 4s, which I’m usually pretty good at, and then tough par 3s. That’s the — I think that sets up well for my game. It’s more of a ball-striker’s golf course than anything else, and I think that’s what I’ve done so well, the two times that I’ve won here.”"
McIlroy is 32nd in par-4 scoring average and sixth on the par-5s. He’s a respectable 38th in par breakers and could really get rolling on this course if he rekindles his game this week.
