Ryder Cup: Breaking down each member of Team USA
This year’s coaching staff is lead by a golfer who knows his way around the Ryder Cup. Jim Furyk was chosen as the captain, and he has played on nine U.S. Ryder Cup teams. Although he doesn’t have the best record at 10-20-4, he brings a lot of experience. Furyk has the second most appearances for anyone in U.S. history, second only to Phil Mickelson.
Furyk brings along a ton of experience with his coaching staff as well. Davis Love III stands out, as having coached the team twice, in 2012 and 2016. He was an assistant to Corey Pavin in 2010 as well. Love brings the most playing experience of any Vice-Captain as well. His appearances number six, not missing a Ryder Cup from 1993-2004.
Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson find themselves at the Ryder Cup once again. This time, it is as a coach for the first time. With four and five trips respectively, they bring along recent experience that should help bring the U.S. Ryder Cup squad success.
Steve Stricker and David Duval are the two remaining Vice-Captains. Stricker has been at the Cup much more recently than Duval, playing the three matches from 08-12. Duval played in 1999 and 2002. Duval will bring a different type of coaching and analysis to Furyk’s team, as he has been a studio analyst on Golf Channel for the last few years, while still competing sporadically.
