Golf study says playing more is good for mental, physical health

A recent golf study shows that our beloved sport boasts more health benefits than many of us even thought before. This one might be worth keeping in your back pocket next time you want to justify sneaking out for a quick nine.

A recent study came out suggesting that you should play more golf. Its good for your health, and in many different areas too.

The study was released by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, and suggests that there are many benefits to your health if you get out and play more golf. Now, a big part of this comes with the understanding that if you are going to be out there looking to get healthier or maintain your good health, that you will be walking.

We all know that riding in the cart is fun. Getting out and enjoying the weather, regardless of what it looks like, always leads you to feeling good, and if anything, at least feeling like you got a good workout in. There are multiple areas of your body that benefit from getting out and walking a round.

There are definite cardiovascular improvements when you play more golf and walk while doing it. When you think about how many miles you actually walk during a round, you would be astounded at how far it actually is.

If you are playing a 6,000 yard course, that’s around 3.5 miles just from tee to green. This isn’t counting in all the trees, long grass, walk-backs, and walks from green to tee. You are likely getting a solid five miles in.

It can also help to improve your cholesterol and your blood pressure. Yes, you may find a couple spikes in your blood pressure during a round. Heck, you might have a couple hours of high blood pressure during your round. Overall, walking during your round is now proven to help lower those aspects of your health outside of the game of golf.

Another aspect of this is you mental health. Getting out there and doing something that you enjoy is good for you. If you are doing it with people that you like, or even interacting with other people, that can be beneficial too.

You can help to reduce the risk of depression in your life, and anxiety as well, by getting out there and being involved in some sort of moderate physical activity. If you are out walking around, whether you are pushing, pulling, or carrying your clubs, this definitely qualifies.

It’s not just the fact that you increase your cardiovascular endurance from walking. You build up your leg and core strength by being out there and walking a round. Play more golf, it’ll be good for you. Hey, in this case, it’s not just an excuse you make to get out there and play more.
