Bryson DeChambeau is well known for his unconventional tactics on the course. Starting in 2019, one more can be added to the list. Putting with the flagstick in.

One of the many new rules heading into 2019 is the fact that you can now leave the flagstick in when you are putting. People fall on both sides of the argument on whether this helps you or not. We all know now that Bryson DeChambeau falls on the “leaving the flagstick in” side.

Speaking with Golf.com at a photo shoot, DeChambeau elaborated on his careful decision. He did it in quite the DeChambeau way that the public has grown used to as well.

“It depends on the COR, the coefficient of restitution of the flagstick,” Bryson DeChambeau said. “In U.S. Opens, I’ll take it out, and every other Tour event, when it’s fiberglass, I’ll leave it in and bounce that ball against the flagstick if I need to.”

There is a specific reason that he mentioned the U.S. Open. Those pins are thicker than standard pins, and the other pins on Tour. If viewers are interested in the type of pin being used, you can tell just by watching a hole with DeChambeau. If it’s a metal pole, he will be leaving it in. If it’s fiberglass, he will be taking it out.

Bryson DeChambeau has been leaving the flagstick in already whenever he can. If he is close to the green, or putting from the fringe, he likes to leave the pin in. Not all players do this, as Phil Mickelson is actually the opposite. He prefers having the flag tended, even when he is pitching, sometimes up to 60-70 yards away.

This isn’t the first time Bryson has challenged the public standard for what people do on a course. There was the famous incident earlier this year where he was using a compass or protractor on the course. This one got him in trouble, and he was told to stop using it.

The one that is more famous was his decision to use the same length clubs. This has been something that has been adapted by a few people. He isn’t the first to adapt to the single plane motion, but he is definitely the most current and popular adapter.

Whether or not you agree with DeChambeau on leaving the pin in, it is going to lead to some interesting shots regardless. There may be some more issues with DeChambeau and the people he is playing with as well. Do not be surprised to see him putting the pin back in after his playing partners have taken it out, potentially more than once on a single green.
