NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA – SEPTEMBER 06: Zach Johnson of the United States plays his shot from the 13th tee during the first round of the BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club on September 6, 2018 in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images) /

As I said in the introduction, I desperately wanted to start Rickie Fowler or Jordan Spieth this week, but their $11,000-plus salaries were simply too crippling to my plans for the rest of the roster. Thankfully, this week at least, we have options, and I’m more than happy to take my chances with Zach Johnson as the most expensive player on my team.

Johnson hasn’t teed it up in competition since the BMW Championship in September, but considering the setup at Camaleon lends itself to ball-strikers, it seems like too good of a pairing to pass over.

Johnson did make his career debut in Mexico last year, and he finished tied for 23rd in his maiden voyage. He took a few days to adapt to the course, but he went all out when he did, closing with a masterful seven-under round of 64 on Sunday.

The Iowa native hasn’t won on the PGA TOUR since the 2015 Open Championship, but he continues to be a reliable hand. He ranked 31st on TOUR in Strokes Gained – Approach in 2017-18, 29th in Strokes Gained tee-to-green, and ninth in Strokes Gained around the green. He’s not going to overpower anybody, but a 19th-place finish in adjusted scoring is nothing to scoff at, either.

I understand that Johnson seems like a bit of a risk considering his premium price tag. But realistically, a sub-$10,000 salary for just about any player gives us room to avoid scraping the bottom of the salary barrel.

I don’t see many conditions in which Johnson isn’t at least playing the weekend, and I believe he could be a solid top-ten finisher this weekend. Unless you’re going to roster a true top player this week, you can’t ask for much more than that.
