The Match: Gambling is Going to Make this Interesting
Tiger vs. Phil is a couple days away, and I couldn’t be more excited for The Match. It recently came out that they are betting 200K on the first hole. If this type of betting continues, its going to make it one of 2018’s greatest TV events.
In the recent interview hyping up The Match, Tiger and Phil sat down to answer questions and start the trash talk. It didn’t talk long for the gambler in Phil to come out, as he posed a wager to Tiger. 100K that he would birdie the first hole. Tiger’s response? “Double it”.
The Match hasn’t even started yet, and there is already a 200K wager on how Phil plays the first hole. There has been some talk on whether or not people should shell out the $19.99 for this match. If the well known active gambling Phil shows up, The match is going to be incredible to watch.

Phil and Tiger are the two highest earners in PGA history. Money isn’t an issue for these guys, and they have made plenty more in endorsements. The hope is that Phil can bring the old aggressive and uber-competitive Tiger Woods out. They have been rivals for a long time, and there is no way Tiger wants to lose at anything.
Whether or not it is highest bet offered, most creative bet, or most bets made, Tiger is going to want to beat Phil in more than just the match. They have already put 200K on the line on whether or not Phil birdies the first hole. I would make a bet that this wont be the only bet, or the biggest bet they make.
If this turns into a real money skins match at some point, it wouldn’t be a surprise. If Tiger sticks a shot on a par 3, i could easily see him turning to Phil and saying “$1 million you can’t hit it closer”. The same can be said for Phil in the exact situation.
If this goes well, it could become an event that happens more often. There are plenty of big name, competitive, young golfers who have already made a lot of money. Personally, I would love to see Rory and DJ play against each other, as you know that they would start throwing down money on who can hit the ball further.
There are a lot of golfers who enjoy gambling, and it can make your match more interesting. I am one of them, and most of the people i play with are the same. Now, its a completely different class in the amount of money being bet, usually in the single digit amount. Imagine having to hit a shot with five to six more zeroes added on to that bet.

During The Match, there is going to be a fair amount of downtime, as the entirety of the event is watching two greats play golf. If we can get some trash talking and side action going on, it’s going to make this day after Thanksgiving match one that could change the game of professional golf.
