Heading into round 3, Tiger Woods was one under par for the week. Starting with Round 3, he decided to give the world a glimpse into an old school Tiger Charge.

If you missed the first four holes that Tiger played in Round 3 this weekend, you likely thought that the tracker was broken. At least that the good ol’ Tiger Tracker on twitter was hacked. This wasn’t the case, as Tiger Woods went on a legitimate charge that had the golf world abuzz.

Birdie. Eagle. Birdie. Birdie. This is how he started off his round. Social media was going crazy. Were we going to see a run at 59? Was Tiger going to finally break through and win at Riviera? Was this the moment that Tiger came back, and asserted his dominance over the rest of the golf world?

No, no, and no ended up being the answers. Tiger finished with a 31 on the back nine (his starting nine), and did eagle hole 1, to get to -7 for his round. He finished +1 over his last eight holes, turning in the rarely seen disappointing 65.

This was the only exciting section of the weekend for Tiger. He played -7 on those 10 holes to start his day, and +1 on the other 62 holes of the week. He finished with one eagle, 11 birdies, and 14 bogeys over that stretch, leading to a lot of unclaimed opportunities .

When i saw Tiger Woods start that third round, it instantly reminded me of two Tiger Woods video games I played when i was young. The first, a computer game, would see Tiger catch fire, and the game would say “Tiger Charge”. The second, you could actually move the ball around in the year, adjusting the spin, to get it to go where you wanted. It seemed like both of these were coming true over those first four holes.

Maybe this is the precursor to a great year for Tiger. If he is able to put together a stretch like this at a course that he has yet to win at, what is he going to be able to do at other courses where he has asserted his dominance in the past? Is the real Tiger on his way back? Are we seeing round two of Michael Jordan with the Chicago Bulls? Or are we seeing Michael on the Wizards? He can still put together some great stretches, but it’s never quite enough.

In the end, it was just a glimpse, and nothing more. Tiger instead played like a regular tour golfer during all the other holes. A birdie here, and a bogey there. As the season heats up; figuratively and literally, it will be a must watch anytime Tiger tee’s up. Different from the last few years, it will instead be to see Tiger Woods fighting for a win, instead of fighting to make the cut.
