The defending Charles Schwab Challenge champion is also the highest ranked player in the field.

Rose has been his usual consistent self this season. He won early at the Farmers Insurance Open and since has three top-10s in seven starts.

He got off to a good start of 70-67 last week at the PGA Championship before coming back down to earth to finish T29.

More from Pro Golf Now

This will be the Englishman’s sixth time playing Colonial, though last year was his first trip back since 2010.

Rose fired 66-64-66-64 (-20) to come up one shy of Zach Johnson’s 21-under tournament record set in 2010. Rose won by three over Brooks Koepka. I can’t imagine BK is still stewing over that one.

At a place where approach is important, Rose finished at 79.17% greens in regulation, as well as 66.07% fairways. He rode a hot putter on Sunday to gain 1.854 strokes on the field.

A course like Colonial has birdies out there, but it takes a good plan to pick them off.

"“I’ve really enjoyed the golf course first and foremost,” Rose said in 2018. “I’ve enjoyed the strategy of it and the challenge of it. So far being able to sort of play smart but also play it well enough to find some birdies out of it.”"

For the season, Rose is fifth on Tour in total strokes gained (1.823) led by eighth in strokes gained putting (.738). He’s also 14th in strokes gained on approach (.711) and sixth in proximity from 175-200 yards.

Next. I slept in the parking lot at Bethpage Black. dark

This will be his fourth start since the Masters, so even after a grueling week at Bethpage Black, I like Rose to retool and contend at Hogan’s Alley.
