I wrestled with the placement of a lot of players in this week’s top ten. The upper tier is pretty homogeonous, which makes it seem like a horse for the course type of week.

It’s hard to say that about DeChambeau, whose trips to Colonial have netted finishes of MC-MC-T42. He got off to a great start of 68-67 but couldn’t keep the pedal down for the weekend, going 71-70 in 2018.

He hit it great (77.78% greens in regulation, 62.5% fairways, 317.6 driving average), but struggled on the greens.

The former SMU Mustang will have a course advantage in a sense in that he’ll be sure to get solid support being back in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

"“Look, there are a lot of holes out here where par is a great score. You just have to take advantage of the easy holes,” DeChambeau said in 2018. “Par-5s you got to make birdie and the short par 4s you got to make birdie and you got to wedge it close.”"

DeChambeau’s game was not in great shape at this time last year. He figured it in his next start in a win at the Memorial and has won four times worldwide since. The last one, though, came in February in Dubai. He has three top-20s since then but hasn’t contended and has missed cuts in his last two starts.

He ranks 26th on Tour in overall strokes gained (1.101) and is positive in all categories. That’s highlighted by 13th in strokes gained off the tee (.677).

It’s hard to know if this will be the week that DeChambeau figures it out, but there’s bound to be an uptick. He’s too good to omit entirely from the Charles Schwab Challenge field.
