Hank Haney foolishly goes after Tiger Woods in latest Twitter gaffe

Hank Haney caught a well-deserved backlash after his tone-deaf comments on the U.S. Women’s Open. His snipe at Tiger Woods on Tuesday just made things worse.

Hank Haney is at it again on Twitter. At this point, someone should probably just tell him to put the phone down. After catching a riotous backlash for his comments on the U.S. Women’s Open field and getting a suspension from his SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio show, he doubled down on Tuesday by taking a shot at his most famous student, Tiger Woods.

Somewhere, Herm Edwards is screaming, “DON’T PRESS SEND!”

The beef between Tiger and Haney is obviously deeply rooted and, frankly, that hatchet isn’t getting buried anytime soon, except perhaps in each other’s backs. But instead of moving on from his “Lee” blunder (instead laughing about the fact that the eventual winner was, indeed, a Korean with the surname Lee), he attempted to turn the tables on Woods.

"“Amazing how @tigerwoods now has become the moral authority on issues pertaining to women. I spent 6 great years coaching Tiger, and not one time did he ever hear me utter one sexist or racist word. Now, in addition to being a 15 time major champion, I guess he thinks he’s also a mind reader? #glasshouses”"

Well, that one was received loud and clear. I mean, aside from the fact that Haney doesn’t seem to understand that @ mentioning someone in a picture doesn’t work. I’m pretty sure we all know that Tiger’s handle is, in fact, @TigerWoods. He’s kind of a big deal that way, but I digress.

It’s simply remarkable to me how much Hank Haney must truly despise the player who made him a household name in golf to take this shot. The not-so-thinly veiled reference to Woods’s admitted infidelity scandal – the one which shattered his public persona and cost him tens of millions in sponsorship dollars – is somehow meant to make Tiger’s thoughts on Haney’s comments invalid somehow?

News flash for you, coach. Tiger was asked a direct question about your comments, and he happened to agree with approximately 90% of the rest of the world in saying they were inappropriate, especially in today’s social climate. And even though the comment about picking “a Korean” was clearly meant in jest, taking your medicine and moving on is usually the best course of action. It’s taking a bogey when it could have been a triple.

But nope, that’s not enough. Tiger Woods dared to acknowledge Haney’s gaffe, and sure, he was blunt, but he was also right. He took his medicine for his faults, acknowledged he had done wrong, and he’s better than ever today. Haney apologized for his comments, but refuses to let this issue die.

Instead of trying to make nice and take the high road, Haney seems more interested in a poorly-planned digital pissing contest. By reminding everyone of what Tiger did, he surely believes, it will prove that he’s not so bad, after all, right? Maybe, but he still comes out of this looking petulant and immature.

Hank Haney owes so much of his career to Tiger Woods that it’s shocking to me that he’d be willing to harbor this personal grudge for so long. Heck, he even made a ton of money off of his book, “The Big Miss”, which in many ways mirrors this most recent comments.

“The Big Miss” is a book predicated on a look at how Haney helped build, and rebuild, Tiger’s swing. It’s also a very clear attempt at making Tiger the villain of their broken relationship, both personal and professional.

Tiger is known to hold a grudge. As it turns out, Hank Haney might have him beat in that regard. The only difference is that Haney doesn’t have the polish or charisma to pull that off, nor the timing to know when he’s been beaten.
