Charl Schwartzel has announced that he will not play the rest of the 2019 season due to injury. The 34-year-old Pro will sit out the rest of the season to rehab and rest his injured wrist.

This year was a little rough for Charl Schwartzel. He missed the cut in eight of 13 events that he played in. He withdrew in one more of them. Add in a finish of T61 and T70, and you can see that it was a tough year.

He did have a nice two match stretch, finishing T6 in Puerto Rico, and following it up with a T16 at The Honda Classic. Unfortunately, that was the end of his strong play this year.

After the 2018 U.S. Open, he was ranked a solid 45th in the world. He has slowly dropped since then, and now finds himself at 135th. It’s the perfect time to step away and get healthy for Charl Schwartzel.

Playing through the issue isn’t working, and wrists are nothing to joke about in golf. They are such a strong part of the game that any issue with them can greatly effect your play all around the course.

At only 34, he definitely has a lot of time ahead of him, which is what he elaborated on in a recent tweet.

This may be something with Charl Schwartzel that has been lingering for a couple years, at least when it comes to his play off of the tee. After finishing 13th in SG off the tee in 2014, 7th in 2015, and 46th in 2016, he reverted to a completely different player.

2017 saw him fall to 110th, 2018 he was 119th, and this year a much lower 208th, losing over 1.5 SG off the tee.

If the wrist had been slowly getting worse and worse, this would definitely be an indicator and help explain the fall in that category. It’s a little odd to see someone play so consistently in an area like that, and then fall off.

For Schwartzel, taking time off is the right call. He can get completely healthy, get any issues with his wrist figured out, and take the appropriate time to ease back into golf for the 2020 season. Likely by playing some smaller events on the European Tour.

Charl Schwartzel is a former top ten player in the world. With a sold 4-6 months of rest and rehab, there is no reason that he can’t get back to that form. Best wishes to Mr. Schwartzel.
