Italy’s Andrea Pavan is the new BMW International Open Champion, after he got the better of England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick in a playoff at Golfclub München Eichenried on Sunday afternoon.

The pair finished on a score of -15, with Andrea Pavan shooting a final round 66 to come from three back to make the playoff. He then birdied the second playoff hole to take the title, his second on the European Tour.

Seven players tied for third, including overnight leader Jordan Smith. He struggled throughout the final day, shooting a level par round of 72, after three birdies and three bogeys.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello was one of those who tied for third on -13, but it could have been much better. The Spaniard needed just 30 shots on the front nine, but was unable to carry on that momentum through the final stretch. A bogey on the last saw last year’s champion Matt Wallace miss out on the playoff, as he when a birdie on 18 would have made it a three-way tie at the top.

Also in a tie for third were Edoardo Molinari, Alvaro Quiros, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Matthias Schwab, who held the lead at -15 halfway through his final round. However, three bogeys on the back nine saw him fall away from Andrea Pavan.

Two men shot 65 on Sunday, tying the low round of the week. Thorbjorn Olesen moved himself up into a tie for 10th with his -7 final round, while Austria’a Bernd Wiesberger moved up into the top twenty after his final day.

2008 winner, and home favourite, Martin Kaymer, also finished in a tie for 16th, alongside the Austrian, after struggling on Saturday, when he shot a three-over-par, taking him out of contention.

Former champions Robert Karlsson and Thomas Bjorn both failed to make the cut in Munich come Friday evening. Sergio Garcia, who hosts next week’s Andalucia Masters, also failed to reach the weekend’s action.

One of the best stories of the week came on Friday, as Gaganjeet Bhullar hit a hole-in-one on the par three 17th at Golfclub München Eichenried. This was not just any hole-in-one, though.

The Indian did it on the very hole where a BMW M8 Coupe was on offer for the first man to do so, if any, throughout the week. Bhullar eventually finished the tournament at +1, after rounds of 75 and 74 at the weekend, but he did take home a brand new car. Peaks and troughs, let’s say.

The next event on the European Tour is the Andalucia Masters, which starts on Thursday morning, with tournament host Sergio Garcia looking to win the title for a third straight year.
