John Deere Classic: Dylan Frittelli takes home first PGA win
The John Deere Classic became the most recent event to crown a first-time winner, with Dylan Frittelli taking home the Trophy.
In the growing list of 2019 first time winners on the PGA Tour, Dylan Frittelli added his name to the list after the John Deere Classic. He would end up winning by two strokes over Russell Henley.
Dylan Frittelli had to play a great round on Sunday, as Henley put together arguably the best round of his career. Henley would shoot a 61, with ten birdies and no bogeys, putting pressure on the rest of the field to post low scores themselves to keep up with him.
Frittelli was able to do just that. Although he didn’t quite need to match Henley’s 61, he started the day five strokes ahead of Henley. He would match Henley with a bogey-free round, shooting a 64 to get to -21 for the week.

There was bound to be a lot of movement Sunday, as there were 14 players within four shots of the lead. Neither one of the leaders was able to put together a good enough round to keep themselves in the mix. Cameron Tringale and Andrew Landry were both at -16 heading into Sunday, but after shooting 73 and 69, respectively, they would finish T-16th and 3rd.
Dylan Frittelli ended up shooting the third-best round of the day with his 64, a score only bested by Henley with his 61. Tyler Duncan surprised everyone, shooting 63 to get to -12 for the week. The only player to tie Frittelli was Viktor Hovland, as his 64 got him to -14 for the week, and was good enough to get him a T-16th finish.
A win wasn’t all Frittelli got on Sunday, as there is plenty more besides a trophy. The win vaulted him into the top 100 of the OWGR, as he climbed to 92nd. He also takes home his first-ever million-dollar paycheck, as the winner of the John Deere earned himself $1.08 million.
The OWGR isn’t the only rankings that he made a leap in. He is now in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup rankings and is well inside the top 125 ranking requirement to make it into the first FedEx Cup event.
This win also gets him full-time status on tour next year, as well as invitations to a handful of events. The ones that stand out are an invite to The PLAYERS Championship, as well as this little event that happens in April called The Masters.
Dylan Frittelli played great golf all week. His worst round of the four he played in was still nothing to scoff at. 66-68-65-64 was how he finished, amassing just one bogey all week, and finishing with 22 birdies. He was the only player to finish the week with one bogey, with Nick Watney carding two, and a handful of other with three.
Next up for Frittelli? A Charter flight to Ireland, where he will be teeing it up on Thursday for the British Open. Best of luck over there to the first time winner.
