Fantasy Golf: Draftkings Selections for the FedEx St. Jude Invitational
By Hans Geevers
The PGA Tour and DraftKings return to Memphis, Tennessee for the WGC: FedEx St. Jude’s Invitational.
This tournament will have a limited field of only 64 golfers that will NOT have a cut after 2 rounds. From a DFS perspective, a no cut event with a small field presents difficulty when it comes to differentiating your lineups in Draftkings contests.
This event was formerly the St. Jude’s Classic. However, this year the Tour has classified this tournament as a World Golf Championship event with invitational status.
Let’s first take a quick look at the course. The FedEx St. Jude Invitational will be played at TPC Southwind. This course is a par 70 that measures approximately 7,244 yards. The track features narrow fairways with small green complexes that feature Bermuda grass.

In my opinion, a golfer’s previous course history is a much more important factor this week. I can say with absolute certainty that the players that I place in my Draftkings lineups for this event will have performed well at TPC Southwind in tournament play prior to this week.
I am looking at the following statistics for this week’s event: Scrambling, GIR (greens in regulation), and driving accuracy.
Now let’s get to what I love doing the most! Here are my DraftKings Selections for the FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
Billy Horschel (7,500)
I am anchoring my DraftKings lineup with former FedEx Cup Champion Billy Horschel. Yes, I am aware that Dustin Johnson has an outstanding record at TPC Southwind. However, in my opinion, going with the likely chalk this week is not the play if you hope to gain the edge that is needed to win a DraftKings contest.
When I evaluated the field of 64 players at this tournament I focused on players with outstanding previous course history, golfers that were not in contention or missed the cut at the Open, and players with overall good recent form. For me, Horschel checks all of those boxes.
Billy did miss the cut at last week’s Open Championship. Not a concern for me. He is not a links specialist. I did not expect him to perform at Royal Portrush. It has to be said that I think it is an advantage that he did not play the weekend at the Open. Horschel was able to get on a plane on Friday and travel to Memphis well before most of the players competing.
Let us not forget that Northern Ireland is quite a long way from Memphis, Tennessee. In my opinion, Horschel will arrive in Memphis fresh both mentally and physically. Obviously, that is a good thing.
With regard to previous results at the St. Jude Classic, Horschel certainly checks that box. Billy has four top 10 finishes at the St. Jude Classic in the last five years. I recognize that the St. Jude Classic was a much weaker field of talent than this week’s World Golf Championship event. However, I love the fact that Billy has performed at a high level previously at TPC Southwind.
Billy has performed well on the PGA Tour recently as well. Prior to his missed cut at the Open, Horschel finished 19th at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May and 9th at the Memorial Tournament in June.
I also should note that Horschel has always performed significantly better putting on pure Bermuda grass greens over the course of his career. As I mentioned previously, TPC Southwind’s greens are pure Bermuda. I clearly believe that the Bermuda greens are one of the reasons Billy has four top 10 finishes here in the last five years.
Brandt Snedeker (7,400)
Mr. Snedeker has been playing some quality golf over the last few months. Yes, I know he missed the cut at the Open. What I would say to that is he missed the cut at the Open on the number (+2). Also, let us not forget that a number of elite golfers missed the cut at the Open. The names McIlroy, Woods, and Adam Scott immediately come to mind.
Prior to his missed cut at the Open, Brandt posted some quality finishes on the PGA Tour. Let’s take a quick look at a few of those good results.
He finished 5th at the Players in March, a very impressive 16th at the PGA Championship in May, and posted yet another 5th place finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in June.
I should also note that Brandt historically performs outstanding around the green. Let me provide some clarity to that statement. Snedeker currently ranks 3rd on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green. In my opinion, a golfer must have a very good short game if they plan on performing well at TPC Southwind.
Let’s take a look at a few of Snedeker’s previous quality results at the St. Jude Classic: 5th in 2007, 15th in 2011, and 6th in 2018. I think it’s clear that Brandt feels comfortable playing TPC Southwind.
In my opinion, Brandt Snedeker’s Draftkings price of only $7,400 is far too low. I personally think he should have been closer to $8,000. Time will tell if my opinion is accurate.
If you are looking for lower-priced golfers to complete your lineups I like the following to possibly finish in the top 25:
Ian Poulter (7,400)
Finished 3rd at the World Golf Championship event in Mexico earlier this year. He also finished 12th at the 2019 Masters.
Eddie Pepperell (7,200)
In my opinion, this young golfer has the talent to shock some people this week. He finished 3rd at the prestigious Players Championship in March.
Keegan Bradley (6,900)
He currently ranks 25th on the PGA Tour in GIR (greens in regulation). He finished 2nd at the Travelers Championship in June.
Nate Lashley (6,500)
He finished 28th at the 2019 U.S. Open. Lashley followed up that quality result with his first PGA Tour win at the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Good luck this week! Enjoy the FedEx St. Jude Invitational!
