Patrick Reed reminded the golf world that he’s still a top talent this week, emerging victorious at THE NORTHERN TRUST and making a massive jump in the FedEx Cup race.

It’s been an interesting year and a half for Patrick Reed. Since donning the green jacket in 2018 Reed has been mainly an afterthought on the PGA TOUR. But on a beautiful summer day just across the river from Manhattan, Reed proved once again that his steely nerves can stand up to the toughest of tests.

Several times on the back nine it looked shaky for the 29 year old Texan, but with world class chipping and superb putting, Reed was able to hold off several competitors.

For a while it looked as if Jon Rahm would be the one to hoist the trophy, after leading the tournament by two shots at the turn. But as we’ve seen before the spaniard’s emotions got the best of him. After a rather pedestrian shot into the postage stamp par-3 14th, Rahm 3 putted from 61 feet.

His subsequent drive on the challenging dogleg left par-4 15th found a difficult spot in the left fairway bunker. Upon realizing where his ball was Rahm was clearly displeased. He would go on to record another bogey, all but eliminating his chances of winning.

Several other players had good chances of wining as well. Harold Varner III posted 3 consecutive birdies on the back nine, but a costly double bogey on #9 all but ended his chances. Varner III was 4 over par for the week on the hole.

Finally there was Abraham Ancer. The diminutive Mexican showed his world class short game time and time again, but a few early bogeys and missed opportunities ultimately left the former Oklahoma Sooner one shot back of the eventual champion.

However, with his stellar performance, Ancer should be a lock to make the Presidents Cup this September for Ernie Els’ squad. His solo second place should also get him into East Lake which in turn means an invite to The Masters.

Patrick Reed now has a legitimate shot at making noise through the TOUR Championship, moving from 50th to second in the FedEx Cup playoff standings. But for tonight, at least, he’ll enjoy his latest title – winner of THE NORTHERN TRUST, 2019 edition.
