The European Tour travels to Switzerland for the Omega European Masters. Let’s preview this event from a Draftkings Fantasy Golf perspective!

Before we dive into my Draftkings Fantasy Golf player selections, let’s take a look at the golf course, lineup strategy, and the statistics I will be focused on for the week.

This event will be played at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans Montana, Switzerland. This golf course is a par 70 that measures approximately 6,848 yards. The tournament has been played at this golf course every year since 1972. Due to this fact, DFS players have a wealth of course history to review as they evaluate which golfers they will place in player pools for Fantasy Golf DraftKings contests.

This golf course has small green complexes and fairways that demand accuracy off the tee. A golfer will certainly not succeed this week by just bombing drives off the tee. For me, precision off the tee is paramount to success on this track. Finding the small green complexes will be extremely difficult from the rough, I can assure you.

More from Pro Golf Now

As I evaluated previous player results at this event, it became quite clear to me that golfers have historically not performed well at this event on their first attempt. For that reason, my recommendation is as you evaluate golfers for your Fantasy Golf lineups, keep in mind the importance of previous experience at the Omega European Masters. In summary, the data clearly suggests that prior course experience is vital for a golfer to have success at this tournament.

I should also mention that this tournament is played in the Swiss Alps. It is important for a golfer, and caddie for that matter, to understand the importance of making distance adjustments due to altitude. Believe it or not, not all professional golfers do a great job with playing at altitude due to struggles with the altitude’s effect on the golf ball.

The statistics I am focusing on this week are driving accuracy, GIR (greens in regulation), and scrambling. Here are my Fantasy Golf picks for this week.

Matthew Fitzpatrick $11,400

I am leading my selections with the two time defending champion of the Omega European Masters. I tried to find a way to fade Fitzpatrick, but the data would not allow me to do so. What data you may ask? Well, let me provide some specifics.

Fitzpatrick’s course history at this event is simply outstanding. Fitzpatrick has played this event five times since 2014. He missed the cut in his first attempt in 2014. However, since 2014, Fitzpatrick has four consecutive top-seven finishes at the Omega European Masters!

With regard to current form, Mr. Fitzpatrick certainly checks that box as well. Let’s take a look at Fitzpatrick’s last three tournament results. He finished in 20th place at the Open Championship, fourth at the WGC: FedEx St. Jude Invitational, and second at last week’s Scandinavian Invitation.

Yes, I know that Fitzpatrick comes in at a rather expensive Draftkings price of $11,400. Some DFS players will full fade him due to cost. I understand. Having said that, I will be playing him in a large number of my Draftkings lineups. In my opinion, Matthew Fitzpatrick has too much win equity in this event for me to fade him.

Danny Willett $9,200

If you are looking for another course horse, well, look no further. Danny Willett certainly fits that narrative. Mr. Willett clearly loves this golf course.

Willett has played this event ten times. In those ten events, Willett has five top 25 finishes, including a win in 2015.

His recent form is very good as well. He has made the cut in seven of his last eight tournaments (PGA and European Tour events combined).

Let’s take a look at some of Willett’s quality results this year. He finished 12th at the United States Open in June, sixth at the Open Championship in July, and 24th at the Northern Trust earlier this month.

I should also mention that he finished 27th at the WGC: Mexico in February. This tournament is played at altitude. Willett’s quality finish in Mexico clearly illustrates to me that he has no problem achieving a good result in a tournament with the best players in the world. This week’s Omega European Masters will not have a field of talent even close to that of the WGC event in Mexico.

I am backing the 2016 Masters champion with confidence this week.

If you are looking for additional lower-priced Fantasy Golf picks for your Draftkings lineups I like the following to make the cut and possibly top 20:

Marcus Kinhult $7,700

He finished 10th at the 2015 Omega European Masters as an amateur. Won the British Masters earlier this year. Kinhult finished in a tie for 20th at the Scandinavian Invitation last week.

Wu Ashun $7,500

Ashun has two consecutive top 10 finishes at the Omega European Masters. He finished fifth at the Volvo China Open in May.

Matthew Southgate $7,400

Southgate currently ranks eighth on the European Tour in GIR (greens in regulations). He has two consecutive top 30 finishes on the European Tour. He finished 30th at the 2018 Omega European Masters.
