Top Five Incendiary Storylines from the 2019 PGA Tour Season
The 2019 PGA Tour season is officially over. Let’s take a look back at the most incendiary stories of the year that was.
The 2019 season on the PGA Tour was a close call. It looked for a minute like we wouldn’t make it out alive. But here we are, just days after Rory McIlroy won the Tour Championship (and thankfully the FedEx Cup as well) ready to look back on a truly wild year in golf.
To be clear, the storylines on this list aren’t the “best” storylines of 2019. Nor are they the happiest, nor the most exciting, nor my “favorite.” Instead, they are something better. They are incendiary. Say it with me, “incendiary.” Now say it like William Miller did in Almost Famous.
Incendiary, of course, means something that is designed to cause fires. Truly, there is not a more apt word in the English language to describe the stories on this list, because all of them set not just the golf world ablaze, but the entire world of sports.

But before we begin, let’s remember some of the less flammable storylines from the 18-19 season on the PGA Tour that just missed the cut.
Honorable Mentions:
Tiger vs. Phil: The Match: What a train-wreck. Who could’ve possibly predicted the waste of time this match was? Oh, that’s right, everyone. At the very least, the $19.99 pay-per-view charge was either botched or intentionally disabled by someone at Bleacher Report with a conscience. The good news is that a match-play challenge series is back. In just a couple of months Woods, McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, and Jason Day will compete in a skins game played in Japan.
Brooks Koepka’s Weight Loss: Remember how Brooks Koepka lost a bunch of weight before the Masters? Yeah, we know why did that now. And it didn’t affect his play…or did it? He only won one major this year right?
The Open: The Open Championship almost made this list for two different reasons: (1) McIlroy missed the cut on a course at which he holds the course record (did you know that?), and (2) an Irishman won The Open on Irish soil for the first time in history. Ultimately, neither storyline had the staying power to make the list (sorry Ireland/Northern Ireland).
New Tour Championship Format: It was good. No need to get worked up about it.
So, without further delay, and before the 2020 season kicks off (in two weeks), here are the five most incendiary storylines from the 2019 PGA Tour season.
