Fantasy Golf: DraftKings Preview for the Porsche European Open
By Hans Geevers
The European Tour travels to Germany for the Porsche European Open. Due to the fact the PGA Tour does not have an event this week, DraftKings will provide a large number of Fantasy Golf contests for this tournament.
Before we discuss my Fantasy Golf Draftkings players selections, let’s take a look at the golf course the field will be presented with this week, DFS strategy, and the key statistics that I will be focusing on for the Porsche European Open.
This event will be played at the Green Eagle Golf Course in Germany. This track is a par 72 that measures approximately 7,544 yards. This course has five par 5 holes and five par 3 holes. Additionally, this track has water hazards on 17 of the 18 holes.
It should be noted that this event has been played at the Green Eagle track for the last two years. Due to this fact, Fantasy Golf players should isolate the previous results at the Porsche European Open to the 2017 and 2018 editions of this event as they evaluate player pools for Draftkings contests.

In my opinion, based on the statistics of players that fared well at this event in the last two years, driving distance and driving accuracy are absolutely essential to success on this golf course. This track is very long and has water all over the course. You have to be aggressive off the tee and accurate in order to find these greens.
The key statistics I will be focusing on this week are GIR (greens in regulation), driving distance, driving accuracy, and strokes gained putting.
Ok. Let’s shift gears and dive into my Fantasy Golf player selections for the 2019 Porsche European Open!
Matthias Schwab $9,400
In my opinion, Schwab is on the verge of getting his first win on the European Tour. Why do I feel that way? Let me provide some specific facts that lead me to this belief.
First of all, the 24-year-old Austrian arrives at this event in outstanding form. He has two top 10 finishes in his last two events, a fifth-place finish at the Czech Masters and an eighth-place finish in last week’s Omega European Masters.
Additionally, I like the fact that Schwab has shown previous outstanding tournament results in Germany. He finished third at the 2019 BMW International Open in June. He also finished seventh at the 2018 Porsche European Open, which was also played at Glen Eagles Golf Course. I love the fact that Schwab has illustrated that he can achieve a great result on this track.
I mentioned earlier in this article that GIR (greens in regulation) is one of my key statistics for this week’s event. Well, Schwab checks that box. Schwab currently ranks 18th on the European Tour in GIR.
I also like the fact that this man can hit the golf ball a long way off the tee! Schwab ranked 18th in driving distance in last week’s Omega European Masters field, averaging a driving distance of 330.9 yards for the tournament.
I recognize that the field this week has some outstanding talent. However, I just can’t go with the likes of Paul Casey and Patrick Reed. For me, Reed and Casey are just too expensive on DraftKings this week.
I think Schwab is an outstanding pivot. Additionally, I love Schwab’s DraftKings price which is only $9,400.
Paul Waring $7,900
I generally don’t like backing a player that does not have any previous course form in DFS. However, this week I am making an exception with Waring. I just like the look of Waring’s game and I think the Glen Eagles Golf Course suits his game.
Waring has played consistent quality golf in 2019. He has made 12 of 14 cuts on the European Tour this year. Additionally, Waring has four top 20 finishes in his last eight events! That is outstanding stuff.
I watched Waring win his first European Tour event at last year’s Nordea Masters. I recall being quite impressed with Waring’s resolve and composure in the final round. Frankly, he passed my eye test.
For statistics, Waring currently ranks second in GIR (greens in regulation) on the European Tour. Waring’s ability to consistently pound greens will help him succeed at this event, no doubt.
I must say, from a DFS perspective that I love Waring’s DraftKings price of $7,900. I think he presents outstanding value and wins equity at that price point.
If you are looking for lower-priced golfers to complete your DraftKings lineups I like the following to make the cut and possibly top 20:
Jeff Winther $7,300
Winther finished 22nd at the 2018 Porsche European Open. He has made 12 of 15 cuts in 2019.
James Morrison $7,000
He has finished in the top 30 in his last three events. Morrison currently ranks 12th on the European Tour in driving accuracy.
David Drysdale $6,900
Drysdale finished 23rd at last week’s Omega European Masters. He finished ninth at the 2018 Porsche European Open.
Espen Kofstad $6,700
He has made four consecutive cuts on the European Tour. He finished 12th at the Made in Denmark Open in May.
As always, good luck this week with Fantasy Golf!
