England’s Callum Shinkwin is the sole leader of the KLM Open after he shot an opening round of 66 to finish the day at -6, leading by one shot.

Callum Shinkwin had just a single bogey on his card on Thursday, to go with five birdies and an eagle, as he leads a European Tour at the end of play for the first time.

The Englishman holds a one-shot lead from a group of seven who all shot 67 on opening day. That group includes a trio of Englishmen, Chris Paisley, Sam Horsfield, and Matthew Southgate.

Scotland’s Marc Warren also sits at -5, alongside Malaysian Gavin Green, Swede Per Langfors, and Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard after the first day.

Dutch amateur Koen Kouwenaar is in the group two shots back from the lead, after he carded an opening round of 68 at The International, just outside Amsterdam.

He is joined at that score by fellow Dutchman Rowan Caron, experienced Spaniard Sergio Garcia and a host of other players.

Defending KLM Open champion Ashun Wu sits at -3, after he shot a 69 on Thursday. He is joined by home favourite Joost Luiten, who had a complete round of two halves.

After starting on the 10th, the Dutchman was three-over at the turn. However, a front nine of 30 saw him finish the day at -3, after the birdie on the 9th, his final hole of the day.

Lee Westwood, Jamie Donaldson, Edoardo Molinari, and Nicolas Colsaerts are all in the group at -2, four shots back from the lead, while the likes of Padraig Harrington and Thomas Pieters are a further shot back.

64 players shot under-par on opening day. Meanwhile, Patrick Reed was one of those to hit 72 and sits at level par after the first day.

The American was joined on the score by Scotland’s Euan Walker, who is participating in his very first European Tour event this week.

The likes of Trevor Immelman, Matt Wallace, Martin Kaymer, and Jorge Campillo all shot over-par on the first day in Amsterdam, and they will need to improve if they are to make the cut line to reach the weekend’s action.
