Safeway Open: Pro Golf Now Staff Picks to Win at Silverado
The PGA Tour heads to the Safeway Open this week as the next event on the schedule.
As the season starts to get rolling, bigger names are starting to show up, as evidenced by the field at the Safeway Open this week.
West Valentine won the week for our staff last week with his pick of Byeong Hun An, who ended up in third place.
Let’s see if any one of our crew can pick the winner this week. Remember, these are solely based on the contributor themselves. If you want to check out some power rankings or some fantasy golf advice for the Safeway Open this week, we’ve got you covered there too.

Justin Thomas – 13/2
John “Davey” McWaters – He’s had success there in the past, and I feel that he’s finally 100% healthy. I look for him to go low early and often this week.
Patrick Cantlay – 10/1
Jordan Perez – A “safe”-r pick, yes, but hear me out. Cantlay hasn’t played since the season finale Tour Championship, where he finished 9-over … while that doesn’t sound promising, I’m confident there’s plenty left in 2019 Cantlay.
He’s put up personal record finishes in majors and captured the Memorial dub. Silverado favors Cantlay with its wider fairways, where his accuracy has fallen a little short in the past year (57 %). But his work on and around the greens has been favorable and is sure to give him a leg up in the coming week.
Kathy Bissell – Patrick Cantlay
Adam Scott – 14/1
Kasey Kuhrts – In what is without a doubt the best field of the year so far, I am going to go with Adam Scott. Adam finished up last season pretty strong, but he hasn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2016. I think this is the perfect time for Adam to capture another PGA Tour win, and start this season off strong!
Hideki Masuyama – 14/1
Chris O’Day – An extremely talented golfer, he is one of the top players in this week’s field. I like Matsuyama to take the “W” this week.
Bryson DeChambeau – 20/1
West Valentine – The Safeway Open in Napa California! Funny fact: none of the wineries in Napa allow their wines to be sold in Safeway. I kid, I kid. Love you Safeway. Thanks for hosting a golf tournament next to a bunch of wineries! We better not run out of Slammin’ Sammy Sangrias.
My choice this week is Bryson DeChambeau. While the rest of the field is feeling that Cabernet glow and saying things to their caddy like, “Oh who knows, maybe it’s a 6-iron, I love you man,” my guy Bry will be dialed in like a vintner with OCD (Think Rainman with a discerning palate). He’ll blitz the day-drinkers and poke the locals in the eye by drinking Grey Goose (his latest sponsor, really) all week.
Chez Reavie – 40/1
Matt Coles – I will go for Chez Reavie for this week’s Safeway Open!
Abraham Ancer – 40/1
Bill Felber – I’ll take Abraham Ancer for the following reasons:
- Anybody in the field could win. He’s in the field, therefore he could win.
- He has a chance to be the first person named Abraham to ever win a PGA Tour event, although I’m pretty sure Abraham Lincoln might have if the tour existed when Lincoln was in his 20s.
Emiliano Grillo – 40/1
Hans Geevers – In my opinion, you need to be an outstanding ball striker to win this week. For me, Grillo certainly fits the narrative of a great ball striker. I also love the fact that he won this event in 2015. He certainly has the game to win this tournament a second time.
Phil Mickelson – 66/1
Richie Randolph – I’ll go with Phil Michelson this weekend. There are no stats to back this up but Phil the Thrill will want to prove he deserves to be on the Presidents Cup team. He is changing his body, hitting bombs and will win the Safeway this weekend!
Best of luck to everyone on our staff who sent in their picks this week, and to those playing at the Safeway Open this week!
