Jon Rahm Takes Top Spot In Race to Dubai Standings
By Matt Coles
After a dominant victory at the Mutuactivos Open de Espana this week, Spain’s Jon Rahm is now at the top of the 2018-19 Race to Dubai Standings.
Jon Rahm took his second victory of the season, after a win at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open earlier in the year, to move ahead of British Open champion Shane Lowry in the standings.
The Spaniard now sits in 1st on 3,898.3 points, ahead of Lowry on 3,535.4. Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open winner Bernd Wiesberger is the only other man over the 3,000 point threshold.
Only three other men are within 2,000 points of Jon Rahm, with a trio of Englishman rounding out the top six. Matt Wallace (2,389.1), Tommy Fleetwood (2,379.6), and Matthew Fitzpatrick (2,085.9) are still up there, but with at least 1165 points available for the winner of the remaining Rolex Series events, there is plenty still to play for.

After his victory at the BMW PGA Championship a couple of weeks ago, Danny Willett is inside the top ten, along with a trio of South Africans, in Erik van Rooyen, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and Louis Oosthuizen.
Jon Rahm leads the way thanks to victories at the Mutuactivos Open de Espana and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. The World No.4 also finished 2nd at the BMW PGA Championship, another of the Rolex Series events.
The Spaniard finished in a tie for 2nd in another of his home events, the Andalucia Masters, and has also made three top tens in majors and the World Golf Championships tournaments.
He was in a tie for 9th at the Masters at Augusta National, before then ended the US Open week in a tie for 3rd. Rahm also had a 7th place finish at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, a week after a T11 result at the British Open.
The winner of the British Open, Shane Lowry, sits in 2nd place in the standings, having been toppled by Rahm, who is now 360 points clear of the Irishman.
Lowry secured a first major title at Royal Portrush in July, which followed up his victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first Rolex Series event of the year. He also finished inside the top ten at the PGA Championship.
Third-placed Bernd Wiesberger also has two wins on the European Tour this year, including his first Rolex Series title at the Aberdeen Standard Investments.
The Austrian also tasted victory at the Made in Denmark Open and finished 2nd behind Rahm at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open a week prior to his win in Scotland.
The English trio of Wallace, Fleetwood, and Fitzpatrick do not have a win between them on the European Tour this year, but all three have been consistent.
Wallace finished in a tie for 3rd at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, and has also had top-three finishes at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Betfred British Masters, BMW International Open and the KLM Open.
Fleetwood earned over 1000 Race to Dubai points for his 2nd-place finish at the British Open in July, and also has top-ten finishes at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, Betfred British Masters, Omega European Masters, and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Fitzpatrick has three runner-up finishes on the European Tour this year, having come 2nd at the Hong Kong Open, BMW International Open, and the Scandinavian Masters, along with a T4 finish at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
Danny Willett is the fourth Englishman to sit inside the top ten of the Race to Dubai standings. He currently sits in 8th, with the majority of his points coming from his victory at the BMW PGA Championship. He also finished T6 at the British Open at Portrush.
The first of three South Africans in the top ten is Erik van Rooyen, who sits above Willett in 7th. The South African earned his first European Tour victory at the Scandinavian Masters and has also achieved five other top-ten finishes this season, including a T8 result at the PGA Championship.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout sits 9th in the Race to Dubai, despite having taken zero points away from the majors and WGC events. His maiden European Tour victory came at the Andalucia Masters, and he also has five other top-ten finishes, including a 3rd place at the BMW PGA Championship.
The final man inside the top ten is Louis Oosthuizen. He won his home event, the South African Open Championship and he also has top ten finishes at the US Open, WGC Matchplay, Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
There were also some big movers after the Open de Espana, with Rafa Cabrera Bello moving up 11 please to now sit in 11th, just 90 points outside the top ten in the Race to Dubai.
Fellow Spaniard Adri Arnaus moved into the top 30, while Aussie Jason Scrivener made his way into the top 60. South Africa’s Zander Lombard is now inside the top 75, while Joachim Hansen moved up a huge 30 places and is now well inside the top 100 on the Race to Dubai list.
