Now that we are less than a week away from Tiger Woods decision on picks for the Presidents Cup, who has jumped ahead of the pack?

Trying to guess what’s in Tiger Woods’s mind has been a fool’s errand for most everyone since he turned professional. But it’s time to take a crack at it with the Presidents Cup picks.

There may be betting odds on this, but they weren’t anyplace on Ladbrokes. A lot of betting sites don’t deal with golf at all because it is very hard to predict. But if you can find a place to plunk down a bet and want to know more about gambling, check out this link because it has basics.

But back to Tiger’s thinking. First of all, we have to take him at his word when he finished the ZOZO Championship.

"“I think I certainly as a player got the captain’s attention,” he joked after the final round."

He won there, grabbing his 82nd title. Getting his knee scoped, he said, was a big part of his success.

"“I feel better. I’m able to hit shots that I know I can hit, and this week was a good sign for the future,” he added."

So, markdown Tiger Woods picking Tiger Woods for the 2019 Presidents Cup team. But because Woods likes drama, expect him to pick himself last, not first.

Now, how about Gary Woodland, who ended Presidents Cup qualifying No. 10 on the points list.

"“We talked about it,” Woodland admitted. “We joked with each other that we both needed a pick so we’re out here trying to impress Tiger.”"

Woodland won the U.S. Open in 2019 at Pebble Beach, and then he took some time off while his family grew by two. His wife had twins. That put him in 10th place in points at the end of the 2019 season.

"“I had a great year earlier in the year, and I played well the last two weeks, so hopefully that’s enough,” he added."

Woodland finished T15 at Shriners, T3 at the CJ Cup and 5th at the ZOZO Championship.

After his fall performance, Woodland should be a lock for a pick.

That’s two.

The others in line for a pick on the points list are Tony Finau at No. 9, Rickie Fowler at No. 11, and Patrick Reed at No. 12.

Expect Tiger to go with Finau. Although he didn’t play well at the ZOZO, finishing T-59, he fared better at the Shriner’s where he was T9. Finau was a captain’s pick for the ill-fated 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup team, and he finished with a 2-1 record, which was better than some of the better-known players.

Now it’s down to one more pick, and there are plenty of choices.

Rickie Fowler is a very good putter, but he took the fall off to get married. Not a great way to impress the captain. But Fowler has a lot of team experience having been on two previous Presidents Cup teams and four Ryder Cup teams. He’s the kind of guy who can play with anybody.

Patrick Reed likes his nick-name of Captain America and often plays better on teams than his year-long results might indicate. His only fall tournament was the ZOZO where he finished T17. The only question for Reed is how many players are comfortable playing with him as a partner?

Tiger could also go outside the box and pick Chez Reavie, who finished T33 at the Shriners, missed the cut at Safeway, was T46 at the CJ Cup and 70th at ZOZO. It’s not a really strong performance compared to that of Woodland.

Or he could go for Kevin Kisner who played only one tournament in the fall series, the ZOZO. Unfortunately for Kisner, he finished T66, seven spots out of last, tied with Jordan Spieth.

But what if Tiger Woods did something completely unexpected and picked Phil Mickelson? Mickelson has been dieting to have more energy. He missed the cut at the Safeway, was 61st at Shriners and T31 at the CJ Cup. He has been trending up, as they say.

Say what you want about Mickelson’s age and his inability to perform well recently. When it comes to someone who can pull a rabbit out of a hat on the golf course, he’s your guy. Royal Melbourne, where the Presidents Cup will be played, is almost custom-made for his kind of game because it requires such a good short game. And there few players on the planet who can out-short-game him.

In theory, after Woodland and Tiger Woods, it should be Finau and Reed or Finau and take a breath… Mickelson.
