PGA Tour Fantasy Golf: Mayakoba Golf Classic Preview
By Hans Geevers
Fantasy golf players will be happy to hear that the PGA Tour returns this week after a week hiatus. The Tour travels to Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic!
Before I dive into my DraftKings/fantasy golf selections for the week, let’s take a look at the golf course the field will contend with this week and my key statistics for this event.
The Mayakoba Golf Classic will be played at the El Camaleon Golf Club. This golf course is a par 71 that measures 6,987 yards. This course is a tree-lined coastal track that offers small green complexes. It should also be noted that this track is a Greg Norman design.
This event has been played at El Camaleon every year since 2007. This is what all fantasy golf players want to hear. Why? Well, because this event has been played at this track for so many years, an abundance of course history is available for DFS players to evaluate as they compile player pools for DraftKings contests.
The key statistics I am looking at this week are driving accuracy, GIR (greens in regulation), strokes gained approach, and scrambling.
Russell Knox $9,300
When I think of a golfer that loves playing on coastal golf courses the first player that comes to mind for me is none other than Russell Knox. I guess I should not be surprised that Knox loves playing on the water and in the elements. The man is from Scotland! I just love his chances to win in Mexico this week.

Let me provide some clear data to support my opinion that Knox is the man most likely to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
First of all, this man has had an outstanding previous form at this event. Knox has played the Mayakoba Golf Classic six times since 2012 (all played at El Camaleon). He has made the cut in all six starts. More importantly, he has three consecutive top nine finishes at this event, including a second-place result in 2015.
As far as the current form goes, Knox certainly checks that box as well. Knox finished 15th at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in September. He followed up that quality result with an 11th place finish at the Bermuda Championship in October.
I should also note that Russell’s last win was at the 2018 Scottish Open, which was also on a coastal golf course.
When it comes to current statistics, Knox checks that box for me as well. Russell currently ranks 10th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (1.285).
Brian Gay $7,900
If I am following the narrative of continuing to find golfers that love coastal tracks than I am doing well going with Brian Gay. This man has traditionally been outstanding on coastal tracks!
Gay arrives in Mexico with two top-seven finishes in his last three events on the PGA Tour. His most recent result was a third-place finish at the Bermuda Championship.
If you are looking for additional golfers to compete your fantasy golf/DraftKings lineups I also like the following to possibly top 20 this week.
Brice Garnett $7,60O
He has four straight top 25 finishes at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, including a fifth-place finish in last year’s event.
Xinjun Zhang $7,300
Zhang finished 20th at the 2017 Mayakoba Classic. He also has three top 16 finishes in his last four events on the PGA Tour.
Brian Stuard $7,100
Stuard finished fourth at the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open in October. He also finished ninth at the 2017 Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Rafael Campos $6,100
The 31-year-old Puerto Rican finished 18th at the Bermuda Championship in October. Additionally, Campos currently ranks 26th in scrambling percentage (73.33) on the PGA Tour.
