After a full day delay, round one at the Mayakoba Golf Classic is in the books.

For those of us hoping to catch some golf on Thursday, the PGA Tour was unable to satisfy our needs. Heavy rains delayed round ones start at the Mayakoba Golf Classic by an entire day, and the opening tee offs were unable to happen until Friday morning.

Everyone was able to get their golf in though, and some players flirted with exceptional rounds to open the Mayakoba.

First-round leader Danny Lee fits that description. Lee found himself in a situation we have seen a few times across the Tour this season already, where a golfer goes off on their first nine holes, setting themselves up for a chance at a historic round.

Lee was -7 through his first eight holes, with five birdies and one eagle. The eagle occurred on the par-five 5th hole, and he followed that up with three straight birdies to get to -7. After the 13th hole, it looked like we might have a new member to the under 60 club, as Lee was -10 with five holes left on this par 71 course.

Unfortunately, he would bogey 14. He followed that up with four straight pars and would finish the day at -9. Not shabby by any means, but you know that Lee knows he left a career-defining moment out there on the course.

There are a few golfers right on their tail though. First off is Chris Baker, who looked like he would be tied with Lee. He put together his own run, really turning it up on the back nine. He would eagle the par-5 13th, following it up with birdies on 14 and 15 to get him to -9. He had a clean round up to that point with seven birdies and one eagle to get to a tie with Lee. A bogey on 16 dropped him to -8, and another bogey on 18 would actually drop him behind the next two players, as he finished at -7.

Both Adam Long and Brendon Todd shot -8 63’s in their opening round at the Mayakoba as well. Todd’s was the cleaner of the two, as he finished with eight birdies and no bogeys. Long had one bogey and nine birdies.

Joining Baker, who was mentioned earlier, at -7 is a trio of golfers. Vaughn Taylor, Zach Johnson, and Mark Hubbard all finished at 64, two shots off the lead.

Site favorites Abraham Ancer and Scottie Scheffler both had nice opening rounds as well. Both golfers shot -5, good enough to place them in a tie for 10th.

A lot of golfers were able to stay within range of Lee and the rest of the golfers near the top of the leaderboard. There are an impressive 14 golfers at -5, seven at -4, and 14 more at -3. With so many golfers in range, we can expect a lot of movement around the leaderboard during the second round, more than the average tournament.

Scoring well was something that was definitely possible today. 104 of the 132 golfers at Mayakoba shot even-par or better. Going a bit further, only nine golfers shot +3 or worse. “Leading” the way is Jimmy Stanger. He started on the 10th hole and had two bogeys, a double, and a triple on the back. He shot even on the front nine, but the +7 on the back was enough to give him sole possession of last place by two strokes.

Remember as you turn in for more golf this weekend that the tournament might not finish Sunday, depending on the rest of the weather. It has only been a few years, in 2015, that the tournament last finished on a Monday. Depending on the amount of golf there are able to accomplish this weekend at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, we could see another Monday finish.
