In today’s edition of golf tips, I bring you a new way to keep your round interesting.

It seems like a lot of people are always looking for new ways to gamble when they are playing golf. That is what today’s version of golf tips brings you, a new way to gamble.

At least, a way that I haven’t heard from anyone before. I’m sure other people do it, but I wanted to share it with everyone.

The person that I golf the most with is my old man. I’m around a 10 handicap. I usually shoot in the low 80’s. He normally shoots anywhere from the low 90’s to the 110’s. It can be a little hard to make a straight-up handicap bet with him as his scores vary so wildly. I love it, cause it makes it that much more entertaining to golf with him.

So here is what we do.

There is never anything on the line on the front nine. We just play, no bets, no side games, nothing like that. Once we get to the turn though, that is where the wager comes in. It’s based on how we both did on the front nine, and whatever I beat him by on the front is how many shots I am giving him on the back nine.

Say I shot 44, and my dad shoots 54. This means that I am giving him 10 shots. If I beat him by ten again, then it is a push. We place an amount on each shot, usually 50 cents or so. It’s a good way to put a little action on the back nine, without too much ever being on the line. If he can keep up with me, I’ll owe him a few bucks. If I kick his butt, he only owes me a few.

Luckily for us, it always ends up about even. One of us buys a beer for the other after a while, and then a couple of months later the tables have turned and another beer is purchased, or a hot dog, or a Gatorade… you get the point.

You can change the amount per shot that you are playing for, depending on how active you like to be in your wagering.

I like to play this way with him as opposed to any other types of betting, because of how varied his game can be. In the above scenario, there have been times where I fire off a 37 on the back and am quite happy with how I played. Yet, I still find myself owing him money because he shot a 44 on the back. It can go the opposite as well, as has before. I’ve shot a 46, and he has put up a 62.

If you find yourself playing with someone who scores vary wildly, or if you are indeed that player and are looking for a new game to play when you are out on the course, this is a good way to do it. It works well for us, as we only play 5-10 times together a year. Hopefully, today’s golf tips can help you out a bit when you are looking to liven up your game.
