Tyler Duncan Wins RSM Classic in Playoff over Webb Simpson
Tyler Duncan was able to overcome this week’s odds-on favorite, Webb Simpson, to win the RSM Classic in a two-hole playoff.
Heading into Sunday’s round, Tyler Duncan was four shots back of the lead, with Brendon Todd looking to go back-to-back-to-back. Many thought Todd was going to win the RSM Classic, but Duncan had other plans.
Brendon Todd would shoot two-over, although it was actually rougher than it looks seeing his 72. He double-bogeyed the par-4 6th and bogeyed both the 12th and 14th. He would then make back-to-back birdies, but by then it was much too late.
This opened the door for a handful of other golfers to make a push for the lead. Sebastian Munoz almost made it, finishing the RSM Classic with a final round 68, good enough to get him to -18. It wasn’t quite enough though, as he would finish in 3rd place.

Webb Simpson, the pre-tournament favorite, shot -7 during Saturday’s round. It was enough to put him in reach starting Sunday, and after a final round 67, he found himself tied with Tyler Duncan.
Duncan actually shot the lowest round of anyone all week, with a 61 on Friday on the par 70 Seaside course. He followed it up with the most boring round possible, shooting 18 pars for a 70 on Saturday.
Sunday was more like Friday though, as he would once again shoot the lowest round of the day, this time tied with Cameron Tringale at 65. Tringale’s 65 got him into a T-20th, but Duncan’s 65 did much more than that. It got him into a playoff with the previously mentioned favorite to win the tournament, Webb Simpson.
He got there in style. Two back with two holes to go, Tyler Duncan birdied both the 17th and 18th hole to force the playoff. Once they were finished with the 72nd hole, Duncan and Simpson would walk back to the same tee box they just finished, as the RSM Classic had them play the 18th hole for the first playoff hole.
I guess Tyler Duncan and Webb Simpson quite enjoyed playing that hole, as they each decided to par and play it again. Walking back to the 18th once again, they were now on the second playoff hole.
Duncan was able to take advantage here, as he would birdie the 74th hole of the weekend to get the RSM Classic win over Webb Simpson.
Brendon Todd came into Sunday’s round looking to make history, becoming the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win three straight events. He was in a great position to do so before being derailed with a final round 72.
Ricky Barnes and Doc Redman were right there with Tyler Duncan to start the final round. Barnes was at -14, and Redman at -13. Both would shoot 73, falling to T-20th and T-23rd, respectively.
D.J. Trahan looked like he was going to make a run at the RSM Classic win partway through Saturday’s round. Through 47 holes, he was -17. He would bogey twice over the last seven holes, and sit -15 heading into Sunday. Two bogey’s and a double were too much for him to overcome during his final round, and he would finish at -14, T-8th.
Congratulations to Tyler Duncan on getting his first career win!
