There was a lot of controversy surrounding Patrick Reed and his appointment to the Presidents Cup US Team. After Day One, it looks like he was the right choice.
Patrick Reed has been a talking point in the golf world for quite a while now. All the way back to his time in college. It was no different heading into the Presidents Cup.
At the Hero World Challenge, Reed was caught on camera in what looked to be like him scooping away sand in a bunker to get a cleaner approach to his ball. Pundits, amateur and professional alike, wondered if his antics and actions would negatively affect his play and that of his team at the Presidents Cup.
With how poorly the US Team played during the opening days Four-Ball, it looks like Tiger Woods made the right decision in picking Patrick Reed to the team, as he was one of the few players to put together a strong performance.

It wasn’t quite enough to carry his team to a win and get the US Team their second point, but Reed did just about as much as he could during his opening event. He would have five birdies, three of which would help to halve a hole for his team, which were all strongly needed on a day where the entire international team brought their “A” game.
Reed even nailed a putt on the 16th, giving the US the hole, and getting them back to even. It wouldn’t be enough though, as Hideki Matsuyama would get it back on the 17th.
The 18th proved to be too tough of a pin location for anyone to attack and succeed, and Reed and Simpson would fall to the team of Matsuyama and C.T. Pan.
Patrick Reed played some great golf during the first day for the United States, and Tiger Woods definitely, so far at least, made the right decision in picking him for the team. He was one of the few players for the US to put together a good round, and it should portend well for a US comeback if he is able to keep it up the rest of the week.
We all know that the US definitely needs it after their disappointing showing in day one. Reed was made for these moments, as he showed on the 16th, and has continued to show that throughout his career. Let’s hope, for our sake and for Tiger’s, that he can pull through a few more times. Reed will once again be playing with Webb Simpson today, although their opponents will be different. They tee up against Abraham Ancer and Marc Leishman at 11:28 AM local time, 7:28 Eastern.
