This week, the PGA Tour presents the fantasy golf community with the Sony Open.

Before I dive into my fantasy golf and DraftKings selections, let’s look at the key statistics that I will be looking at for this tournament and briefly touch on relevant player trends, etc. that I have identified as well.

The Sony Open has been played at Waialae Country Club in Hawaii every year since 1965. Due to the fact this tournament has been played on the same track for so many years, I was able to identify what previous winners of this event needed to do from a statistical perspective to succeed.

I observed that the last ten Sony Open champions performed at a very high level in GIR (greens in regulation), strokes gained approach, scrambling, and putting.

For me, those statistics tell me that this is essentially a second-shot golf course that requires short game ability as well. The green complexes at the Waialae Country Club are small. That means all of the golfers in the Sony Open field this week are going to miss greens at times. Having stated that, if a golfer wants to succeed on this track, he better get his short game in order before this event starts on Thursday.

One key fact should be noted: 15 of the last 21 winners of the Sony Open played the Sentry Tournament of Champions the previous week.

Here are my DraftKings/fantasy golf selections for the Sony Open.

Patrick Reed $10,800

Patrick Reed certainly fits the criteria of a golfer that I want in the majority of my Draftkings lineups. He arrives at the Sony Open playing extremely well. Additionally, he has shown the ability to play at a high level at the Waialae Country Club as well.

Let’s first take a look at some of Reed’s recent quality tournament results. He finished fourth at the BMW PGA Championship in September, eighth at the WGC-HSBC Champions in October, tenth at the Turkish Airlines Open in November, third at the Hero World Challenge in December, and finally he finished runner up to Justin Thomas at last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions.

It also should be noted that Patrick Reed finished 13th at last year’s edition of the Sony Open. I think it is clear that Reed likes the golf course.

If you watched any part of last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions you likely observed that high winds were a big factor for the players. Well, the forecast shows that high winds will continue at the site of this week’s event in Hawaii. Reed has always been a great wind player. I definitely like his chances to win the Sony Open this week, making him a fantasy golf must.

Charles Howell $9,100

Howell II has some outstanding previous results at the Sony Open. Howell III has played the Sony Open every year since 2009. In that ten year span, Charles has an impressive seven top-eight finishes at this event.

J.T. Poston $8,100

Poston arrives at the Sony Open on the heels of an eleventh place finish at last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Sebastian Munoz $7,900

He won the Sanderson Farms Championship in September. Additionally, Munoz finished third at the RSM Classic in November.

Lanto Griffin $7,500

Griffin has seven top 18 finishes in his last nine PGA Tour events, including a win at the Houston Open.

Patrick Cantlay had a hot take caught on the mic at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. dark. Next

As always, good luck to any competitions or selections you make for the Sony Open this week!
