Patrick Reed is public enemy No. 1 in the golf world right now, and rightfully so. But from a pure results basis, he’s trending more like a hero.

The 29-year-old last won in August at the Northern Trust in the FedEx Cup. He’s since piled up nine top-20s (five top-10s).

Reed was solo third at the Hero World Challenge in December and lost in a three-man playoff to Justin Thomas at the Tournament of Champions.

A run of 11 straight cuts made dating to May 2019 was snapped in his last start a couple of weeks ago at the Sony Open.

The Texan is more comfortable at events in his home state or on the East Coast, but he’s still got some good results to show for his trips to Torrey Pines.

Reed’s 3-for-3 in cuts made with a T-13 in 2019 (69-69-69-70) the high water mark. He also took T-39 in 2015 and T-23 in 2018. He may as well be 3-for-4, though. His playing partner in 2016, Graham DeLaet, was among those questioning Reed’s WD when he bailed after an opening-round 81 and a sure missed cut.

That was a sign of more questionable behavior to come, but I digress.

Reed did not have his best ball-striking season in 2018-19, but a superb short game made up for it. He ranked 14th in strokes gained around the green (.332) and 44th in SG putting (.261).

I’d like Reed’s chances more if conditions weren’t looking so benign. Nonetheless, he’ll find a way to be in the conversation going to Sunday.
